Joe Phelps, a longtime Baptist pastor and co-chair of EmpowerWest in Louisville, Ky., talks with Word&Way Editor & President Brian Kaylor about how he came to understand his white privilege. He also discusses the work of EmpowerWest on urging Southern Baptist Theological Seminary to pay reparations for slavery. This interview occurred after Phelps spoke at the "Angela Project" gathering in Birmingham, Ala., to recognize the upcoming 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first enslaved Africans to what is now the United States.
